Episode 13: New Surge
Tokyo Ghoul is finally back! And what a great return. A little surprising in certain parts of the episode, but it was as explosive and full of action as I expected it to be. Even though the finale to the last season was great, it felt that the action wasn’t enough and there needed to be more. This episode did exactly that, providing everything I wanted. It didn’t answer all my questions from the prior season, but it at least answered a few and gave more to look forward to in the future.
First and foremost, watching Kaneki interrupt Ayato Kirishima beating up his sister Touka was awesome. Watching that calm and collective face while deflecting each hit from Ayato was badass. In this scene alone we got to witness more of Kaneki’s abilities and resolve along with how quick and calculating he’s become in combat. Knocking Ayato down and scolding him in the midst of a fight was incredibly satisfying. “Shut up, I’m talking.” I’m confident that this is just a taste of what is to come in the future. Also, witnessing Kaneki protect Touka for the first real time was a treat too (about time, given how much Touka has done for him).
This transition in Kaneki’s character alone was significant, but the decision to go over to Aogiri was even more drastic. Since I have not read the manga, I have no idea what would cause him to make that choice, but I am terribly excited to find out the reasoning behind it. Knowing that Kaneki will no longer be that panicked child anymore bodes well for his survival and the survival of Anteiku (since he won’t be there anymore and I get the feeling he is going to find a way to protect them).
New ghouls with astounding abilities, and even the doves have manged to step up their game. Prototype quinques that withstand major attacks? I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off this episode. If this pacing continues, it should be a pretty great season.
Overall, an excellent episode. Although I have many questions about what will happen in the future, I’m just happy that Tokyo Ghoul is back on the air. It delivered a powerful episode that hopefully sets the pace for the rest of the season.Tweet
