BentoByte Sunday Sounds Volume 19 is here and around the world people are celebrating Mother’s Day. Well, here at BentoByte, we’re doing the same thing, just in our own way. Let’s get going with it!

Blumenkranz
Hiroyuki Sawano feat. Cyua

If you’ve seen Kill la Kill, then you know exactly how wonderful parenthood is in that show. “Blumenkranz” is the theme song of Ragyo Kiryuin, the mother to both Ryuko Matoi and Satsuki Kiryuin as well as the main antagonist of the show. To be very blunt, she was a horrible mother and is often included in the trio of horrible parents (which include Shou Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist and Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion). Despite that fact, “Blumenkranz” remains a masterful piece, showcasing Hiroyuki Sawano’s unique production qualities that highlight the voices of the singers that work with him: in this case, Cyua.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was a heartwrenching anime. It was full of happy moments, but at the core it was a very sad anime. The main characters were driven by the death of their beloved mother with certain events centering around their actions. “Trisha’s Lullaby” serves as a constant reminder of the pain that the Elric brothers endured, mostly due to their own actions or lack thereof. The vocals carry over the melancholy mood that the song gives off, bringing you closer and closer to the edge of crying.

Vogel im Käfig
Hiroyuki Sawano feat. Cyua

Attack on Titan was a hallmark anime that reminded viewers of the pain and suffering that can come from war, especially what comes from situations that are wildly out of your control. This song plays during the scene where the main character, Eren, sees his mother die in a rather gruesome fashion. The lyrics of the song sing about moving on from tragedy towards something new, which Eren has to cope with as he and his friends battle against the titans. The song is beautifully composed and fills an entire room, with sweeping strings at every moment.

Mother Is The First Other
Shiro Sagisu

The numerous themes in Neon Genesis Evangelion allow a viewer to latch on to at least something. One of these themes is the prevalence and importance of mothers, as shown through many of the characters’ flashbacks, from Shinji’s mother dying to Asuka finding her mother hanging dead. While most of these characters have mostly sad moments regarding their mothers, the fact that they still remember them serves its purpose: a mother is possibly one of the most important people in an individual’s life, despite what may happen to them. The song itself is a bit weird as it brings about a plethora of emotions, but it works since there are many emotions that you would feel upon watching Neon Genesis Evangelion.

That’s it for this week’s Sunday Sounds. Be sure to tune in next week for more music sent straight to you. Here’s those songs for you one more time:
