The official website for the anime adaptation to Kouta Hirano’s manga series Drifters has uploaded preview images showcasing character designs for the upcoming series. Kouta Hirano is best known for his manga series Hellsing and its two anime adaptations, with Hellsing Ultimate capturing a lot more of the creator’s dark and unique drawing style. (Think grizzly imagery, strangely contorted characters, and characters with multiple rings in the iris.) These character designs give us an idea of what Rouji Nakamori, character designer/animation director, has in mind for the main characters of the Drifters anime adaptation.
Drifters is Kouta Hirano’s first series since his completion of Hellsing. The series began serialization in April of 2009 in Shonen Gahosha’s Young King OURs magazine. The series has since released four compiled volumes and even saw a short OVA released with the final volume of the Hellsing Ultimate. For those interested in learning more about the series, Wikipedia provides a solid description of the story:
Shimazu Toyohisa, while involved at the Battle of Sekigahara, manages to mortally wound Ii Naomasa, but is critically wounded in the process. As he walks from the field wounded and bleeding, Toyohisa finds himself transported to a corridor of doors, where a bespectacled man at a desk waits for him. This man, Murasaki, sends Toyohisa into the nearest door where he wakes up in another world. There, Toyohisa meets other great warriors like him who have been transported as well, to be part of a group known as “Drifters”. This world contains both native humans and a number of fantastical races, including elves, dwarves, and hobbits. However, the world is at war, with the humans waging a losing war against another group of great warriors, the “Ends”, who wish to take over the world and kill all of the Drifters.
