As the Winter 2016 anime season is around half way over, we reflect on the current wonderful seasons of episodes that are piling out right now. Out of the large (and frankly outstanding) shows that are currently airing, here are our picks for the best (or most entertaining) shows of the Winter 2016 anime season:

5. Gate – Season 2

The second season of the modern vs. fantasy world anime Gate managed to hold up to expectations. It maintained its entertainment value through and through. At times it hit a few lull points but that’s only because, when compared to the first season, it is no longer accompanied by the world introduction aspect.

4. Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

What started out as a simple and tame adventure about a group of kids being stuck in a fantasy world quickly turned into something more. With a particularly interesting animation style, a harsh reality came crushing its way into the story and caused the story and characters to develop in good way that opens the series up for numerous possibilities in the future. Although this series was only 13 episodes long, I predict (given on how well it is received) it could go on for at least another 1 to 2 seasons.

3. Dagashi Kashi

What can one say about Dagashi Kashi? It was a slice of life sort of anime that had a large focus on dagashi (traditional Japanese candy) and modern Japanese snacks. Something we’ve recently become quite knowledgeable of. Dagashi Kashi stood out in its characters and the way it depicted the unique value of each snack. I was excited to see the cast members with each episode and interested in learning more about dagashi. While some episodes stood out more than others, the series was entertaining and had just enough tender moments to appeal to my….sweet tooth.

2. Konosuba

Konosuba is a special kind of ridiculous. But it’s very welcome as we desperately needed it this season. If it wasn’t for our number one pick, this would have easily been the best show of the season. By no means should one take this show in a serious manner. And because of that, Konosuba was a glorious addition to the Winter 2016 lineup. This show made me laugh in so many different ways I couldn’t help but lose my shit occasionally.

Each of the characters are ridiculous in their own ways and their mannerisms is what makes them so entertaining. Especially Darkness. Darkness will forever have a special place in my heart. Kazuma’s occasional jackass moments certainly make him a fantastic protagonist. So if you are looking for a hilarious journey with a bunch of eclectic personalities, look no further than Konosuba. 10/10 would watch again

1. Erased

Without a doubt, Erased has been the best show this season. It has the perfect amount of suspense and thrill that keeps the viewer agonizing over what will happen next. It was clever, the plot was concise and handled everything with the harsh reality that a seinen anime could deliver.  Throughout the series, Erased never once disappointed us and the ending even brought a little tear to our eye.

The best part about it? Like Your Lie in April, the source material ended right when the anime ended. So the final moments in the show are canon to that of the manga. If you are looking for a murder mystery with great gobs of heart warming and heart wrenching moments, Erased is a must see series.
