We’ve seen bits and pieces of what Scarlett Johansson will look like as the Major, but now we finally have a full trailer for the upcoming Hollywood adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Visually, the film looks surprisingly good, although it’s hard to say whether Scarlett Johansson can do the role justice or not.
One thing worth noting that seems to be making a lot of buzz today with the trailer’s release is that this film is not an adaptation of Stand Alone Complex. Instead, the film will follow the narrative of the 1995 film. For fans of the television anime, that might be somewhat jarring, but it’s good to see Hollywood attempting to stick with some form of source material. Nowadays it seems like Hollywood is taking these concerns a bit more seriously, though pleas for a more diverse cast seem to have fallen on deaf ears this time around.
If nothing else, it seems that Ghost in the Shell will follow the source material closer than the 2009 disaster Dragonball Evolution. We’ll have to wait until spring when it hits theaters to see how it measures up, but the first trailer seems to be a step in the right direction. It will take more than a good trailer to impress longtime fans of the series, however. Ghost in the Shell will have some competition when Death Note releases next year, so hopefully one of them will manage to win audiences over. The film seems to have Mamoru Oshii’s support at least.
You can check out the trailer for the film below. Ghost in the Shell hits theaters on March 31, 2017.
