A lo! A new year comes along with a anime season! With the Winter 2017 anime season ready to kick off, it’s time to get a bunch of announcements about what is going to be streaming on which service. While the list is nowhere near divided as it used to be since Crunchyroll and FUNimation have become BFFs, it merits a review.
In a not so surprising announcement, Crunchyroll has confirmed that it will be streaming the newest season of Gintama. The new season is being called Gintama 2017 since there are so many seasons of the series at this point. Slated to air as part of Crunchyroll’s Winter 2017 line up, the series will premiere this Sunday (1/8) at 11:35pm and air every Sunday at the same time for the season.
Gintama is one of the longest running anime series left out there. The series began as a manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine back in 2003 and has put out 67 compiled volumes since. The series has had something of an on-again off-again relationship with TV anime. Including this new series, Gintama has had five separate runs on TV along with some original video animations.
If you somehow have never heard of Gintama, I recommend you check it out! I’m biased as a long time fan, but the series obviously has some merit if it’s made a return to TV once again. Crunchyroll has the full series available for streaming and provides a description that I’ll list below:
“In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions.”
