Netflix has released the trailer for their adaptation of Death Note. Along with the trailer comes a release date of August 25. The trailer highlights Nat Wolff as Light Yagami Turner, as he discovers the titular notebook. Willem Dafoe makes a brief appearance as Ryuk, the mischievous shinigami with a penchant for apples.

Reception to the trailer has been mixed. Many fans are questioning the direction of the film, which seems to be more action-focused than previous adaptations of the series. One thing that fans can agree on however, is Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Ryuk.

We will reserve judgment until the film is released in August, but based on audience reception, things are looking grim. Skeptical fans can watch Death Note on Netflix starting August 25.
