I only heard the rumors that Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend was working on an anime project a few days ago. (I may have been late to this party.) So I was more than surprised by the trailer for Neo Yokio being released just days later along with details surrounding the production and release of the series. After taking a look at the trailer, I’m not sure I entirely know what to expect. So, naturally, I have to share this experience with all of you.
So let’s hash out the details of what we know. Neo Yokio will have 6 episodes available to stream on Netflix starting Friday September 22nd. Ezra Koenig is credited as the creator, writer, and executive producer of Neo Yokio. Nick Weidenfeld is also listed as writer and executive producer.
Jayden Smith stars as series protagonist Kaz Kaan, a “Magistocrat” of New Yokio. Being a Magistocrat seems to including high society life, being a bachelor, and some demon slaying. The cast of the series also includes Jude Law as Kaz’s robot butler Charles, as well as Tavi Gevinson, Susan Sarandon, and Desus Nice. Additionally the series has multiple anime studios on board, including MOI, Production IG, and Studio Deen.
The feel I got from the trailer is certainly interesting. The mixture of the animation style, classic music, and dialogue heard from the characters produces leaves us a mixed bag. I guess it’s a little hard to tell what the series focus is going to be until we see it. So I guess we’ll have to wait a few weeks and see. One thing is clear though, Neo Yokio certainly seems like a unique place. To quote Jude Law’s Charles:
Neo Yokio is the greatest city in the world. It is a diverse labyrinth of cultural and architectural innovation. Of course, whenever a city becomes the envy of the world problems are bound to arise.
