Blame! Anime Movie Review

Having read the Blame! manga, I was incredibly excited to see the film finally launch on Netflix over the past weekend. However, after almost two hours, I had a lot of mixed feelings after my viewing experience. Before we dive in, I have to mention that this review contains spoilers to the movie and the manga (up until volume 3). You have been warned. Blame! has a lot going for it; a crazy setting, great action, ultra-violence to back up said action, and a solid soundtrack. The problem with the film is they didn’t add enough of all the things that make the manga as entertaining as it is. In my opinion, Blame! is...

Drifters Episode 5 Review

Drifters Episode 5 was perhaps the most direct episode of the series we’ve seen to date. While interesting, the plot followed a very linear path as we watched Toyohisa and his group progress from one battle to another. While it’s a bit different than what we’ve seen, I wouldn’t call it a back thing. The episode was broken into two categories: combat and planning. Within the combat sections we saw two battles happen as well as the aftermath of the slaughter at the beginning of the episode. Seeing the Drifters organize the Elves into a militia and enable the abused people to fight back was fantastic. It was like watching...

Drifters Episode 4 Review

Drifters Episode 4 was different than anything we’ve seen from the series so far. Being that we’re only four episodes in, that shouldn’t be too surprising. Every episode could feasibly be different at this point and to some extent they are. However there has been one thing each episode has had in common until now: pacing. Drifters Episode 4 really pumped the breaks and brought the pace of the series down to something of crawl, focusing on different groups of characters actions at the same point in time. Additionally, the majority of this episode was spent on dialogue between characters rather than events or actions that actually pushed the story...

Drifters Episode 3 Review

Drifters Episode 3 was a natural step forward for the series. Our main characters have been introduced, the setting has been at least partially established and the plot has motivation to move forward with Toyohisa leading a new group of followers in the form of Elves that have been wronged. So what do we need? A villain of course! (Well one for the protagonists. We met Easy in episode two but she’s fighting with Murasaki.) The Black King and his “Ends” made a hell of a debut this week. While we don’t know much about the Black King, there are some small details to be found and others we can try to deduce. We know he speaks...

Drifters Episode 1 and 2 Review

Oh how I’ve been waiting for this one. But the wait is over! The anime adaptation of Drifters is finally here and I’m happy to say I’ve really enjoyed it so far. If that’s all you need, go on and watch it. For everyone else, let’s jump right in. Drifters is based on the newest manga by Kouta Hirano, the creator behind the popular Hellsing manga series and the two anime series that followed. This is huge for me; the original Hellsing anime was the first really dark, violent anime series I ever watched and it’s always stayed with me. To this day I can always throw on an episode and enjoy it, even if...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 13 Review

Episode 13 : Pomp and Circumstance It feels rather sad that this series has now come to a conclusion. Here I was hoping for a full 25 episodes (like last season), but it does not appear to be so. At the very least, we at least had a solid season to make up for it. Food Wars! The Second Plate has certainly finished on a high note with the potentiality to give us so much more down the road. Now all we can do is play the waiting game until we hear about another possible season.   I think what was best about this episode was that the development we got...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 12 Review

Episode 12: The Magician Once More Isn’t nice when things that you are hoping for come into fruition? Well Food Wars! The Second Plate brought to the table this week exactly what I was hoping for. For the first time ever we see Soma struggling to keep up in the high pace of Shinomiya’s kitchen. It isn’t often we see him get into a (real) bad spot. At least not for long. With Soma quickly picking up on certain techniques, it will be fun to finally see his own style materialize. He may still be the grumpy villain from the first season, but it is nice to see that Chef Shinomiya does...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 11 Review

Episode 11: The Stagiaire This week, in the Food Wars! world, they dutifully jump back into more character development. Although, it may not be between Erina and Soma like I had hoped, getting to know Arato Hisako was just as good, for now. With the stage and tone being set for the rest of the season, I eagerly await what challenges await our favorite characters. Who knows what will come next and who they will face further in on the Stagiaire? For now, my hope is for Soma and Emilia to get stuck in a restaurant together. Hisako has been pretty downtrodden since her run in with Hayama. Considering she has been absent up...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 10 Review

Episode 10: A New Genius This week’s episode was a bit of a disappointment. Not in how things developed, nor the outcome, but merely based upon how the build-up was done up until the point of the delivery of the verdict. That being said, the rest of the episode was fantastic, there is no where else for this show to go except up (but don’t quote me on that, this episode is a clear case of it floundering). Now that we have finally reached a climax for the first cour of the second Food Wars! season, it is time to gear up for what comes next. We all knew that Soma...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 9 Review

Episode 9: A Sword that Signals Autumn The great battle between the three superpowers in Food Wars! kicks off! With Soma’s friends worried, things transpired in a very expected way this week. While expected, I wouldn’t say this is a bad thing. In fact, this episode was done really well! With the right amount of plot progression, suspense, and a cliffhanger, Food Wars! consistently proves why it is one of the best in the Summer 2016 anime season. With the battle kicking off, the natural arguments that ensued between Ryo and Akira were great. The two of them certainly didn’t skip a beat since their recent quarrel in episode 7. After dismissing...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 8 Review

Episode 8: Battle of Seasonality This week, Food Wars! The Second Plate took a bit of a much needed break away from the constant competition. Instead we got to spend time learning more about the ingredients that will be going into the final competitive dish and more of the ways that the characters competitively distinguish themselves from each other. With a bit more education, a touch of more pre-event dread, and gobs upon gobs of humor this episode was exactly what the doctor ordered. The trip to the fish market was a educational and fun moment of fish and stare downs. I wasn’t kidding, they spend a lot of time staring each...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 7 Review

Episode 7: Beasts Devouring Each Other Food Wars! for the time being, remains rather predicable. We have excellent build ups for great future episodes but are sometimes left with nothing but repetitiveness at times. The episode itself is still solid, mind you, just was cheeky with the delivery. We still get all the classic humor, great references, and a beautiful showcase as to why we are being faced with Soma’s fiercest adversaries. The card game anime reference was fantastic (nice nod to Yu-Gi-Oh!). If there is one thing Food Wars! is never short on is references. There is nothing we appreciate more than the silly moments like that. References aside, Akira’s attack and utilization of spices...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 6 Review

Episode 6: Dawn Will Come Again It comes as no surprise; Soma kicked more ass in this week’s episode of Food Wars! The Second Plate. In a totally predictable turn of events, this episode followed a typical shonen style with nothing of much substance happening in one episode. Outside of that feeling, the episode has solid footing in it’s entertainment value. A bit sad the plot doesn’t move far but it still contained the perfect absurd humor, some new education on food, and actually did a good job in building for the next episode. The quantity of metaphors and allusions to other anime series in this show is phenomenal. Equally good was the battle...

Food Wars! The Second Plate Episode 5 Review

Episode 5: The Secret in the First Bite Well it finally happened. We finally have a bit more interaction between Soma and Erina. The amount of actual interaction in Food Wars! between the two of these characters has been rather limited and I have been hoping that we were going to have more time between the two of them.  I finally got what I have been hoping for. This aside, the episode is doing a solid job of building up the suspense with the battle between Soma and Mimasaka Subaru and introducing the latest addition to the cast! With Soma putting his career and diner on the line, the stakes haven’t...

Berserk Episode 2 Review

Episode 2: The Holy Iron Chain Knights It’s still amazing to me that we’ve finally got another Berserk series. I’ll stop gushing and get over it soon. It’s still awesome though. “The Holy Iron Chain Knights” may be the second episode but it’s the first episode to feel like it’s part of a story. “The Dragonslayer“ was awesome but it was definitely a standalone episode that was focused on getting us back into the world of Berserk and reminding us of how badass and tortured Guts is. “The Holy Iron Chain Knights” took us into the next main arc of Berserk, which is known as the “Conviction” arc. It did skip over a part of...
