Knights of Sidonia Season 2 Review

After waiting for an entire year, reading the manga, and waiting the final agonizing months as it was airing in Japan, Knights of Sidonia season 2 (also known as Sidonia no Kishi or シドニアの騎士) has finally arrived in the United States! To sum it up, this season was exactly what I had hoped for and expected out of it. I understand most people’s hesitation when it comes to 3D animation in regards to anime, but believe me when I say that Polygon Pictures has nailed it with this season. The style may taking some used to but this season lives up and exceeds its predecessor. Fortunately, there are not too many deviations from the overall manga. To top...

Knights of Sidonia Volume 13 Review

Knights of Sidonia Volume 13 got off to a great start. We were treated to every type of moment we could have hoped for. From action, romance, to some cliffhangers, Knights of Sidonia maintains its pacing. From where we left off last time, the crew of the Sidonia was attempting to set up new energy converters. Once again we get to experience Tanikaze and Tsumugi saving the day. None of us are going to complain because it’s the mech-involved space battles that make us love Knights of Sidonia in the first place. It isn’t every day that the story introduces a new spiteful character like Hamagata. And given his rather reckless actions, we’re given plenty...

BentoByte Sunday Sounds: Volume 13

BentoByte is here for the 13th volume of Sunday Sounds. This week, we’re all about getting amped up and prepared for battle, so here are five songs that are sure to get you ready unleash. Before My Body is Dry (OST 2 Version) Hiroyuki Sawano There’s a reason I like this song better than the original. Firstly, it opens up with some heavy guitar riffs and drums, as if preparing you for some grand fight. Then, as the final strings pluck, it evolves into that tune we know and love. However, what sets this apart from the regular version of the song is the precedent it sets and the circumstances...

In an announcement (and a clarifying announcement) made by Sentai Filmworks today, Sentai revealed that they have snagged the rights for Knights of Sidonia (or also known as Sidonia no Kishi). This means that Knights of Sidonia will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD really soon. This will include the ability to purchase a collector’s edition and a combination of audio options. Here is a brief plot synopsis according to Sentai Filmworks: A thousand years after the alien Gauna destroyed the Earth, a small remnant of humanity still fights on to survive, fleeing on the gargantuan asteroid-based spaceship Sidonia. But centuries of flight and warfare have changed mankind in incredible ways: Genetic engineering has...

Knights of Sidonia: Volume 12 Review

Knights of Sidonia has consistently been strong with pacing and action, and this most recent volume was no exception. Overall, Volume 12 had all the elements needed to be a solid addition to the series. As is commonly case with Knights of Sidonia, it answered questions with more questions and killed people off in the process. Now, I’d like to touch on a few specific things that happened within Volume 12. With the launch of Sidonia’s latest weapon/vessel, the crew sets off to test it out. And it wouldn’t be Knights without some level of mischief and, of course, sexual tension. This volume did exactly that: we had space battles, misunderstandings, death, and...

Staff Pick: Best Episodes of 2014

I asked the writers of Bentobyte to choose their favorite episode from shows they have reviewed or follow from 2014 and to describe why.  Here is the complete list of the very best from the Bentobyte team! WARNING THERE ARE SERIOUS SPOILERS FOR SHOWS AIRED IN 2014   Akame Ga Kill!: Episode 23 “Kill the Emperor” In a show where it felt like pretty much any character was a scene away from death, “Kill the Emperor” really managed to shock me and send me reeling with a character’s death. Of all the characters, I thought Tatsumi was probably the safest. Nope. While Tatsumi dying kind of crushed me, I’d be...

Knights of Sidonia: Season 1 Review

Welcome to Knights of Sidonia, where humanity has abandoned a destroyed earth to escape an alien threat called the Guana. Sidonia is one of the  human ships to escape earth into space. The Guana are an unknown alien enemy that are pretty much invulnerable. Excluding their one weakness, their core, protected by a shape-shifting exterior called the placenta (or “Ena” in the Manga). However, even the core is invulnerable to all conventional weapons except a “Kabizashi”, which is a lance-type weapon constructed from an unknown material. The story focuses on Nagate Tanikaze, who has spent his entire life living underground living with his grandfather training to pilot mech-type suit called...
