Final Fantasy XIV Has Over 5 Million Players

Square Enix recently announced that massive multiplayer online role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has more than 5 million registered accounts across the world. This includes accounts registered in Japan, North America, Europe, and China, but does not include any free trial accounts. In addition to this, during an event to mark the two-year anniversary of A Realm Reborn, Square Enix gave details about the game’s upcoming 3.1 patch. The patch adds new quests, new dungeons (Saint Mocianne Aboretum and Pharos Sirius), a new Primal Battle, and a new alliance raid dungeon called “Void Ark.” Players will also be able to earn experience points in the level 50 dungeons. The game...

Whatever Happened to RuneScape?

I’ve played RuneScape on and off over the past twelve years, and I’ve watched as their subscribers slowly dwindled. People always say that World of Warcraft has a tendency to lose subscribers from time to time, but no one pays attention to RuneScape. That’s always been the case as far as I can remember, but one thing that I’ve noticed lately is that big gaming blogs are finally starting to pick it up again. With the addition of raids after fourteen years, it makes a lot of sense. But why is it that nobody talks about RuneScape with a sense of pride and nostalgia? Is it because the game just isn’t...

Atom Universe May be Home’s Greatest Hope

With the announcement of PlayStation Home’s closure late last year, several studios threw their hat in the ring to secure their place as the next successor. Unfortunately, they seem to have gone bust — but there’s another contender on the block, and this one is looking far more promising. That contender is Atom Universe — a social MMO created by Atom Republic to replace PlayStation Home on the PS4 — and unlike previous projects from other developers, it seems almost tangible. It’s also on kickstarter right now, and has 26 days left to go. With the numerous failed attempts to get something off the ground, it’s easy to be skeptical of Atom...

Final Fantasy XI to End PS2/Xbox 360 Service Next Year

It’s been a long run for Final Fantasy XI, the Final Fantasy franchise’s first MMO. It was originally released in Japan back in 2002, making this year the game’s thirteenth anniversary. But all  good things must come to an end and it seems like that end will be next year for Final Fantasy XI — at least on the PS2 and Xbox 360. Don’t get too upset though, as the PC version of the game will continue to live on after that date. Only the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions are getting nixed. Players of the PS2 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will have until March 2016 to...

The Elder Scrolls Online is Headed to Consoles, Ditching Mandatory Subscription

If you’ve been waiting to try The Elder Scrolls Online then you might want to hold off for just a little bit longer, because the game is now on its way to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as The Elder Scrolsl Online: Tamriel Unlimited. That’s not the only bit of news here though, they’re also taking away the need for a subscription. However, they’re not removing it entirely, and in a model similar to Star Wars: The Old Republic, subscriptions will still be available for those looking to get a little more out of their game. According to the press release, the game will be subsidized by micro-transactions and downloadable...

World of Warcraft Veterans Gifted Statues From Blizzard

World of Warcraft celebrated its tenth anniversary last November, and now it looks like Blizzard is offering a little something to the people who have stuck around for the whole thing. According to Smitti on the World of Warcraft forums, a user who has allegedly been subscribed the entire ten years, Blizzard decided they would show a little love to the World of Warcraft devotees that have played consistently since the game’s inception by sending them a gift. The gift in question? Well, it’s actually pretty incredible. To thank players for giving up ten years of their lives, Blizzard has sent out some rather sturdy statues. These aren’t your typical statues made...

Goat Simulator is Becoming an MMO

Earlier this year there was a surprise breakout which subsequently became a cult hit and skyrocketed to the top of the Steam charts, called Goat Simulator. Now, developers Coffee Stain Studios have decided to take the game up a notch and include a piece of free DLC that will allow you to play Goat Simulator as an MMO, The update pokes fun at a variety of MMOs and open world games, most notably World of Warcraft. If you haven’t picked up Goat Simulator yet, maybe now is the time. I have to say, as someone who never got into Goat Simulator, I’m interested.

World of Warcraft Documentary Looking for Group Celebrates a Decade of WOW

World of Warcraft is a very old thing — it’s not uncommon to hear stories of people who played it in high school or college. I myself have been playing on and off since roughly 2006, and you can bet I have plans to return to Azeroth for the latest expansion which goes live tomorrow — Warlords of Draenor. To celebrate ten years of World of Warcraft’s dominance over the MMO field, Blizzard offered up a documentary at BlizzCon 2014 detailing the game from the beginning up until now. Now they’ve uploaded it to YouTube in its entirety, and if you haven’t seen it yet you can check it out...

Earlier this year on Hearthstone we got a huge content update in the form of Curse of Naxxramas — but it wasn’t an expansion, it was just an adventure, the first of many single-player portions to come to the game. Now we’re getting a real expansion, and it’s called Goblins vs. Gnomes.  It will also be out next month, and feature a whopping 120 new cards. If you thought it was difficult to acquire all of the cards, you might have some real trouble now. The above trailer serves as a bit of teaser while also offering up a nice little tune that’s sure to get stuck in your head....

Square Enix Will Broadcast Their Fan Festival Live From Las Vegas

Not gonna be able to make it to the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Las Vegas this weekend? That’s okay, because it looks like Square Enix will be providing a live stream of the event via twitch. You’ll be able to see events, interviews, and plenty of the show floor. The stream will be free to watch in standard definition from the Final Fantasy XIV twitch channel, but if you pony up a bit of cash — $20 to be exact — you can watch the stream from festival’s twitch channel in high definition and get access to some exclusive stuff. What will you get for your $20? HD resolution...

PlayStation Home Developer Madmunki Working on Their Own Virtual World, To Be Crowdfunded via Kickstarter

It seems that with the announcement of Home’s closure numerous developers are stepping up to try their luck building a new platform as a replacement. The latest effort comes from Madmunki, the team responsible for experimental free-to-play game available in Home, Spunland. It’s called Neotoptia, and it’s quite the ambitious undertaking for the studio formerly comprised of just two individuals. In fact — the project is so ambitious in scale that Madmunki has been rapidly expanding their team beyond the original two members, taking on talent from all over the industry including staff who have previously worked on a number of small titles like Burn Zombie Burn and South Park...

Here’s What’s Different About EverQuest Next

EverQuest Next is an ambition project, and one that looks to change everything you know about EverQuest as a series. So what exactly can you expect? Well according to the developers in this new trailer, a lot. For starters, unlike traditional MMOs there won’t be any quest hubs — instead, players will find themselves in a pivotal role during world events. Rather than have lifeless NPCs, EverQuest Next will also feature non-player characters that are programmed to react to the player’s actions. The examples used in this trailer include items which can be imbued with special properties to direct their actions, such as a staff that radiates authority which will NPCs...
