Pokemon GO: What is Abstract Advertising?

When you think of mobile advertisements, I’m sure the first thing that came to your mind was annoying banner ads at the bottom of your screen. Or it is for me. But, in the case of Pokemon Go, Niantic Labs dropped another bomb shell this month for all the Pokemon trainers out there. Niantic Labs has now teamed up with McDonald’s to put gyms on over three thousand locations. This is where “abstract advertising” comes in. The approach that Niantic Labs is taking is considerably more intelligent and well thought out than you typical advertisement paired with mobile games. It’s a way for Niantic Labs to make money without invasive ads that are just...

Another Nintendo 3DS you say?

That’s right, our favorite Japanese friends have added another new 3DS to their “new 3DS” line-up. For anyone who hasn’t gotten a 3DS yet, needs a newer shiner one, or wants to “Catch them all” the Metallic Red new Nintendo 3DS will be available exclusively in Japan on August 27th. This new handheld joins the line-up alongside the white, metallic blue, and metallic black versions of the same model. Sadly for anyone outside of Japan this new Nintendo 3DS ll (XL in america) hasn’t had any word on if it’s going anywhere else, so either cross your fingers or start making friends in Japan. This metallic red “new 3DS ll” is...

Fallout Shelter for Android! Also more Fallout!

That’s right all you Android users! the Bethesda gods have seen fit to right their wrongs and bring the Fallout 4 teaser app Fallout Shelter to the Android market! Sadly Bethesda isn’t quite ready yet, the app will officially come out August 13th on the Android store; but hey better late than never, right? In other Fallout related news, Fallout 4 had a live demo played at QuakeCon and from what we can tell, it’s all Guns and Roses…or ya know Mini-nukes and Companions? The Behemoth mutants from Fallout 3 are back! as well as the Fat Man that we all relied on to kill these absolute tanks. Apparently there’s...

Nintendo is Going Mobile With a New Partnership

For a while now, the widespread access to smartphones and the accessibility of app stores have made the mobile market a popular destination for on the go gaming, a space which was almost entirely dominated by Nintendo ten years ago. Now Nintendo is acknowledging the power of mobile gaming by working with a company called DeNa to bring their intellectual property to smartphones. People have always wanted Nintendo to go mobile, and many thought it would never happen since they’ve had such a large presence in the handheld market over twenty years starting with the Gameboy which saw release in North America and Japan back in 1989. But now it...

Puzzle & Dragons and Mario Come Together in Japan

Puzzle & Dragons is an unstoppable force of mobile gaming, and has been for a while now. It’s also no stranger to collaborations, which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering its massive success thus far. This collaboration might strike you as odd, considering how protective Nintendo is of its characters and assets in regards to licensing beyond their own platform, but it all makes sense when you realize that Puzzle & Dragons Z is coming to the 3DS. It’s really the perfect match given the DS family’s use of a touch screen, I just wonder whether Puzzle & Dragons Z will be as focused on micro-transactions as the original game...

The First Official Expansion for Hearthstone is Goblins vs. Gnomes

Earlier this year on Hearthstone we got a huge content update in the form of Curse of Naxxramas — but it wasn’t an expansion, it was just an adventure, the first of many single-player portions to come to the game. Now we’re getting a real expansion, and it’s called Goblins vs. Gnomes.  It will also be out next month, and feature a whopping 120 new cards. If you thought it was difficult to acquire all of the cards, you might have some real trouble now. The above trailer serves as a bit of teaser while also offering up a nice little tune that’s sure to get stuck in your head....

Terra Battle – Impressions

In the seemingly endless torrent of mobile games chaotically published each week, it can be quite a challenge to find anything worth your while. Lacking any coherent form of quality control or curation, the mobile ecosystem is fettered with uninspired creations, ripe with ideals of consumer exploitation. These tendencies are in no way exclusive to mobile gaming, but because of it’s particular rampancy, I tend to shy away from the mobile market at large. There are, however, a few gems that I have found, cosily tucked away on my phone. I believe the next game to achieve that “gem” status has arrived, and it’s called, Terra Battle. Making it’s North...

Atlus USA to handle Attack on Titan: Last Wings of Humanity

So everyone knows about Attack on Titan. Hell, The Simpson’s made a reference to it this week. With a series this popular, it’s not too surprising to hear that an Attack on Titan action game titled “Attack on Titan: Last Wings of Humanity” came out on the Nintendo 3DS last year. What is surprising is that the game is apparently on its’ way stateside. According to a rating by the Australian Classification Board released yesterday, Atlus USA has plans to localize the game. There is no confirmation on which version of the game will be the one brought stateside, the original or the updated version of the game set to...

Angry Birds are Crossing Over Into Puzzle & Dragons Again

Puzzle & Dragons is an addicting game for mobile devices, and like Angry Birds, it’s also a huge hit. I only started playing Puzzle & Dragons last year, and frankly I don’t play it much anymore — but for the week or so I did play it, I had a lot of fun. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a neat little thing — it’s just not enough to keep me interested. In light of the fact that Puzzle & Dragons has become such a big thing, Rovio Entertainment and GungHo Online entertainment will be partnering again to bring the birds everyone knows and loves to the game once more. As...
