The Tony Hawk series is now on a long hiatus (yes, there is that one game coming to mobile platforms this year but we’re just going to pretend it doesn’t exist for the moment), but it was once a force to be reckoned with. It sold millions of copies and kick-started the music interest of a generation. It also recently turned 15, and so in celebration I’d like to present you with my personal top 10 favorite songs from the series 15 year history.

10. Hieroglyphics – At The Helm

Game: Tony Hawk’s Project 8

Del the Funky Homosapien has been a staple of the Tony Hawk series ever since the third game. He’s worked on multiple projects and several of them have been featured throughout the course of the series 15 year history. If You Must was his first appearance, but he later appeared in Underground, American Wasteland and finally Project 8 where he appeared with Hieroglyphics. Even though I had played every game up until that point, I wasn’t really into hiphop and so At The Helm was my first real exposure to his music. It might not have been the song that changed my perspective toward the genre, but it was a song that stuck out and one that remains memorable even coming from a game that most people would say wasn’t.

9. Alien Ant Farm – Wish

Game: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4

Alien Ant Farm is a band that’s in a weird place. They were incredibly popular in the 2000’s when they released their second album Anthology and slowly fell off afterwards. Like a lot of older bands, they seem to be having a bit of renaissance and looking to make a comeback. I don’t think they’ll ever be relevant again, but they did leave us with some solid hits that will forever remain in the annals of alternative rock history. Wish is one of those. No it wasn’t a single, and no it’s not Smooth Criminal or The Movies but it sure is a lot of fun to skate to.

8. Fear – I Love Livin’ In The City

Game: Tony Hawk’s Underground 2

Fear is a band that brings new meaning to the term classic punk. They’re raw, gritty and they don’t give a damn what you think about it. They even managed to cause a riot in the studio during a performance on Saturday Night Live. It’s also a great song to skate to and one of my favorite memories from the second installment of Underground. There’s nothing like loading up a level and hearing Lee Ving abruptly yell I LOVE LIVING IN THE CITY.

7.  Rage Against The Machine – Guerilla Radio

Game: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

The first game had the warehouse, the second game had the hangar. Yes, the hanger wasn’t quite what the warehouse was but it was close. I distinctly remember playing the second game for the first time and dropping into the hangar to the sound of Guerilla Radio. The way it starts off nice and slow and works its way into the hook was perfect fuel for getting all of the objectives and sometimes to this day I still find the hook getting stuck in my head.

6. Dropkick Murphys – Time To Go

Game: Tony Hawk’s Underground

The Dropkick Murphys are yet another staple for the series, going on to record a cover of Adolescents just for the seventh game in the series — Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland. Time To Go is a song that makes me think of the sea, and it might be an odd connection to make but when I think of Time To Go I think of Manhattan. Not the actual city of course, but the level in the game. There’s nothing like doing combo lines by the water while listening to this fun and energetic anthem.

5. Millencolin – No Cigar

Game: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

No Cigar is a quintessential song for anyone who likes to skate. Did you know that they got their name from the skateboarding trick known affectionately called melon in the series? Enough said, really.

4. Busdriver – Imaginary Places

Game: Tony Hawk’s Underground

You thought Twista and Busta Rhymes were fast? Ha! Busdriver is in a whole other league. I’m not really sure what he’s saying, but man does it sound good. How does he rap so fast?

3. The Distillers – Beat Your Heart Out

Game: Tony Hawk’s Underground 2

The Distillers were one of the first punk bands I ever heard to feature a female singer and I instantly fell in love with them. Brody Dalle has a unique voice and you can tell that she smokes too much, but that doesn’t stop her from delivering great melodic hooks. Beat Your Heart Out is a song that is still in heavy rotation and I always find myself going back to it when I play Underground 2.

2. Refused – New Noise

Game: Tony Hawk’s Underground

Yet another Swedish band, and one more for Tony Hawk’s Underground. This is a song that has to be played loud. Not only do I want to skate when I hear this, I want to jump up and down and scream along to the lyrics. The Shape of Punk to Come is a legendary album, and New Noise is a legendary song. You can feel the energy.

1. Goldfinger – Superman

Game: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

This song comes from the game that started it all, and is such a fan classic that it was one of the few songs from the original included in the HD remake. When I put on Superman, I feel great and I get huge combos. New Noise is an energetic song, but Superman is a completely different kind of energy. This song takes me back to the days of playing the original Tony Hawk, it gets me pumped and at times it’ll even cheer me up.

Well that’s it for this top 10 list, if you have your own favorite songs from the series go ahead and list them below.
