Cardfight!! Vanguard Volume 5 picks up right where Volume 4 left off. Aichi Sendou and Ren Suzugamori are locked in the middle of a battle, both of them using their Psy Qualia powers to the fullest. As the chapters continue, Aichi appears to be on the losing end of things as Ren continues his assault. This reaches its peak as Ren manages to call out the very card that he used to defeat Kai in the past.

The volume does tend to focus a lot on the past of Aichi, Kai, and Ren and the paths the three of them have taken up to this point. Eventually, backstory gives way to the present moment as Aichi slowly begins to bounce back, managing to call upon cards right as he needs them. Eventually, this defense culminates in him bringing forth Exculpate the Blaster and bringing the victory home.

The majority of the volume deals with a battle between Aichi and Kai with the latter having found a new rival in the former. Both of them give their all, with Kai urging Aichi not to hold back and to use his Psy Qualia powers. Eventually, this turns into Kai looking within himself for the power to win. This inadvertently allows him to use Psy Qualia, which might come as a surprise to the readers. The battle ends with Aichi’s win, but with Kai having discovered the power of Psy Qualia and having obtained a new rival in a close friend.

The volume was very entertaining and it was nice to see what has been shown as the height of Psy Qualia’s potential. Where that power will take Aichi, Kai, and Ren is unknown, but it will be an interesting journey regardless. The battles that took place during the volume were very action-heavy, with each of the combatants giving it their all. This may only be the beginning of the story for these characters and it will be interesting to see where their power takes them.
